In situations where we feel angry, afraid, or desperate, our flesh is very often the first responder. When trouble is upon us, God’s methods may seem lame, ineffective, or out of touch. Our desire for immediate relief will lead us away from God’s Word. We do not want to hear about Joshua, who God instructed to shout and praise down the walls of Jericho, or David, who declined Saul’s armor and brought Goliath down with a divinely anointed slingshot. When the going gets rough, the full armor of God seems difficult for us to apply. Hard times may even cause us to question God’s love, sufficiency, and good will toward us. But the question we need to ponder when times are tough is not God’s faithfulness towards us—but our faith in Him! Do we really trust God and His Word? Nothing will test our level of faith like tribulation. Next time trouble comes, before we hand the reins over to our flesh, let us be willing to seek God first. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse!” Galatians 1:6-7

The Good News is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It’s the truth that sets us free, from both the power and the wages of sin. Because the enemy is the author of lies, he distorts and perverts what God has said and done. False Gospels serve those who’d rather embrace their sin, than repent of it. The theologies behind these fake gospels may use harmless sounding labels like inclusive or progressive. But anything that leads us to celebrate what God forbids, is not of God, and therefore has no power to redeem. So, we can choose to walk in truth by the Word—or embrace our old nature by the counterfeit. One offers life—the other offers death. But there is no middle ground.

Dear Lord,
Please keep us from deception. For in your perfect love, you are neither double-minded, nor swayed by popular opinion: You change not. No one can improve your word or your finished work. By your grace, we can take the narrow path, where our hunger for truth overrides the flesh. In Jesus’ Name.
