Disagreement with the Enemy

Jul 1, 2015 | Blogs, Poetry Spotlight

My heart has been ravaged in its quest for home. Darkness feigned light to seduce and lay waste. But, I press on toward my First Love. No “ex-factor” can define or limit me. I’m not frozen in time. I’m a work in progress, ever emerging from glory to glory. My future is bright with the promised fruit of a sanctified womb.

I thank you, Lord Jesus, that your sovereign word is my steadfast disagreement with the enemy.

Disagreement with the Enemy
I run a white glove across my backward glances
Each tender thought of bygone affection

Has sought to hold me captive
Away from, Onward and Upward

I pour salt on the ice cold lie that
My best was left behind.

“Remember Lot’s wife!” Luke 17:32

My Thoughts
Every now and then my mind will stray into the realm of reminiscence. It doesn’t take much: an old song, movie, or situation will often take me to a place of longing for the good old days. If I’m not careful, it can cause me to see my pre-salvation past through rose-tinted glasses.

I run a white glove across my backward glances:
By grace we can give our past the white glove treatment and assess those times with unscaled eyes. Then we are able to declare from a contrite heart that too often, the good old days were only good to the flesh: a shameful pattern that led us from one fleeting, emotional high to the next.

Has sought to hold me captive
Away from, Onward and Upward
Our unsaved past is a dangerous place for any believer to rest because it moves the focus away from God
and onto oneself. It tries to demean the blessed position we now have as children of God.

I pour salt on the ice cold lie that
My best was left behind.
During a storm, salt is used to dissolve and break up the icy patches that cause us to slip and fall. I’m so grateful for the Holy Spirit who comes to the rescue during these times. In the midst of deception He leads us, back to the truth. In Christ our best is always yet to come. We don’t need to get stuck in the past!

Sundays

As a child, my ignorance of God’s love led me to daydream and to idolize those things that appeared to fulfill and affirm. Make-believe was my soulful comfort six days a week. But then came the big day: Our weekly cultural respite from, not enough. Like Cinderella at...

Sight, touch, taste, smell, and hearing: These five monitors of circumstance hinder our eternal perspective. They can dim our heavenly vision, numb our spiritual discernment, neutralize our saltiness, defile the sweet aroma of praise, and even drown out that still,...
