Sundays

As a child, my ignorance of God’s love led me to daydream and to idolize those things that appeared to fulfill and affirm. Make-believe was my soulful comfort six days a week. But then came the big day: Our weekly cultural respite from, not enough. Like Cinderella at the Ball, I got to dress up and food was somehow plentiful.

Abba Father, thank you for our meeting at the well. By faith, I can lay down my water jar and proclaim your name before men. I have received the living water and a perpetual feast not limited to Sundays.

Sundays
Big Mamma didn’t cook no pork
So Uncle Joe came by for dinner
Brooklyn Dodgers filled the air
Iced tea glistened in mismatched glasses
Food fit for a princess
I took it all in
‘Cause Monday was coming
And we’d be poor again, through Saturday.

“Jesus answered, ‘Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.’” John 4:13-14

My Thoughts

There comes a time in the life of God’s elect when natural water (material sustenance) is not enough. Our eyes are opened to see its limitations, and we hunger for the blessing money can’t buy. Jesus comes in – we partake of the living water. Salvation disarms our shameful past. We lay aside our futile attempts at self-preservation, and go forth with a testimony that no man can shake.
