The Seamless Robe

Our Lord prayed, “That all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.” John 17:21

Abba Father, there is no discord in the Godhead. May we walk in unity as a witness to the world: one head, one body – the seamless robe.

The Seamless Robe

From judgment hall to Calvary, the
world laid bare His flesh
With lying tongue and twisted thorn, they pierced Him through in jest
In meekness, He allowed the stripes that tore apart His back
Yet through the Savior’s darkest hour, one thing remained intact

As Jesus shed His blood for us, there gathered at the cross
Were soldiers who, cast lots to gain a precious piece of cloth

The hand of God that tore apart the lofty temple veil
Made sure the seamless robe of Christ in one piece, would prevail

This garment does not justify man’s quest for wealth on Earth
It signifies the unity and oneness of His church

When we pull down the idols of tradition in our hearts
That crept inside and sought to tear the bride of Christ apart
This carnal, manmade, patchwork of religion we’ve become
Will turn into a seamless robe of virtue for the Son!

“Is Christ divided…?” 1 Corinthians 1:13

My thoughts
I’ve always been moved by the idea that Christ’s robe was not torn by the soldiers – it remained intact. All Christians make up one body. As one body, our only legitimate Head is Jesus Christ. He alone paid the price to become both Savior and Lord! Our Head demands that His body walk in unity as a witness to unbelievers. In our physical bodies, the condition of each part affects how the whole body functions. Likewise, Scripture tells us to regard every other believer as one who is important to the whole. Flesh resists this. But, thank God for the Spirit of Christ who puts our flesh in its place. As we follow the Head, our focus shifts from discord, greed, and contention, to unity and compassion. Then we can start to heal – both within and across the boundaries of denomination, race, and other non-salvific distinctions.
