“Delight yourself in the LORD, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm 37:4
When I hear people reference this Scripture, the emphasis is usually on the latter part of the verse. We can focus so much on our desired outcome that we completely ignore the crucial prerequisite, but God does things in order. Those who will renounce the carnal nature and submit to the Holy Spirit are those He can trust with the greatest of blessings. Instead of coming to God with a pre-conceived wish list of desires that we want Him to sanction, we need to understand what it means to delight in the LORD and consider why it is so important. To delight in the LORD means to take immense pleasure, satisfaction, and joy in Him—rather than the things we want from Him. It means to hunger for His presence: that place of divine intimacy where we are transformed into yielded vessels whose desires align with His will. In other words, those who take delight in the LORD are blessed to want what He wants for us.
Dear Father,
Your plan for us is good and perfect: rooted in everlasting love. Your will for us is greater than any desire that we could perceive or imagine. Your Word and Your Spirit declare these truths. In You, we are divinely delighted. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
