Purpose Not Punishment

“Now as Jesus was passing by, He saw a man blind from birth, and His disciples asked Him, ‘Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?’ Jesus answered, ‘Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but this happened so that the works of God would be displayed in him.’”  John 9:1-3

The story of the blind man challenges us to examine how we perceive the plight of others. The flesh likes to point the finger at those who suffer, and attribute their situation to God’s divine punishment: Our old sin nature feels gratified, when it puts others down. But through this miracle of healing, Jesus wants us to adjust our perspective, and come up higher. Finding the humility to acknowledge that we all have fallen short of God’s glory, will enhance our compassion for those who suffer—our appreciation for God’s mercy—and our reverence for His awesome Sovereignty.

Dear Lord,
If not for your grace, none of us would stand! A contrite, teachable heart ushers us into higher levels of divine fellowship with you. There, by your Spirit, we gain a deeper understanding of your ways, and are transformed into vessels fit to accomplish your will, and bring you glory.
