“But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people. What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? God will judge those outside. ‘Expel the wicked person from among you.’”
1 Corinthians 5:11-13
If we truly believe that Christ is both the Head of the church and the Living Word, then we must also agree with the principles found in the Bible and be willing to apply them to our lives—as the Holy Spirit leads us. This is why it is crucial for every believer to know what the Word says and not make assumptions based on feelings or popular opinions. We must rightly divide the Word and not take verses out of context. Jesus tells us to judge not lest we be judged—but He also tells us to judge righteously! Those who use the “judge not” verse as a gag order that prevents us from addressing ungodly behavior have caused sin to run unchecked in the church. Paul makes it clear that in the church we are to judge one another, both for the good of the individual and the whole body. When the Holy Spirit leads us and not the flesh, this kind of judgement does not condemn or isolate permanently but will correct and restore the fellowship that was violated by willful sin. Christians should not spend our time judging people in the world as we
make excuses for the sinful behavior of fellow believers and church leaders.
Dear Father, we need a fresh anointing to behold your holiness. Give us a hunger for righteousness. Enable us to address our carnality according to your Word. Break our soul ties to sin so that we can be a light to the world. Let all that we say and do flow from of your perfect love. Bring your church into holy unity by your Spirit. In Jesus’ Name. Amen
