“But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.”
James 1:14-15
We may recall a popular film in which a husband cheats on his wife. What he thought would be a single indiscretion turned into a nightmare that almost cost him his family. He would learn that the object of his lust had no interest in letting him go–ever. The web of lies and deception escalated to the point of violence and death. Believers are not immune to this entrapment. All it takes is for us to ignore the Holy Spirit and follow our flesh. Whether we have a spouse or not, salvation brought us into a covenant relationship with God who is holy and jealous for our souls. Christ is the bridegroom, and His church is the bride. Sin of any kind dishonors that sacred covenant. When the objects of our lust become idols, they lure us into spiritual adultery, and if this entrapment goes unchecked, it leads to death.
Dear Father,
I am so grateful that you don’t just warn us about the danger of lust, but you give us the power to resist it. By your Word and your Spirit, the deception is exposed. When we draw near to Christ, our desire for holiness increases. As we behold His beauty, fatal attractions lose their appeal, and sin has no room to operate. Thank you, Jesus!
