Saul’s Armor

“Then Saul clothed David with his garments and put a bronze helmet on his head, and he clothed him with armor. David girded his sword over his armor and tried to walk, for he had not tested them. So, David said to Saul, ‘I cannot go with these, for I have not tested them.’ And David took them off. He took his stick in his hand and chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook and put them in the shepherd’s bag which he had, even in his pouch, and his sling was in his hand; and he approached the Philistine.”

1 Samuel 17:38-40

David tried on King Saul’s impressive armor, but he had to reject it. As Saul and his army trembled in fear, the shepherd boy knew that the Lord was greater than Goliath. David chose the weapons that he had tried, tested, and found true. Under God’s anointing, David’s sling shot became a lethal assault weapon. So, God who had given David victory over the lion and the bear honored David’s faith once again. At a time when adversity is threatening and the enemy is raging, we must resist the urge to walk by sight because Saul’s armor is beneath our privilege– and not up to the challenge!

Dear Father,

Anxiety, fear, anger, and other lusts of the flesh may tempt us to sink to the level of our opposition. Please remind us of who and Whose we are. You have delivered us from danger so many times before. As we walk in the Spirit, the weapons of our warfare bring us victory and You alone are glorified. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
